Multnomah Falls Lodge

The Multnomah Falls Lodge is a historic building located near the base of Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. The lodge was originally built in 1925 by Simon Benson, a wealthy lumberman and philanthropist who wanted to provide tourists and travelers with a comfortable place to rest and enjoy the beauty of the falls. The lodge was designed to be a rustic, cabin-style building that would blend in with the natural surroundings.

The original lodge was constructed using local materials, including hand-hewn logs and river rock. The interior of the lodge was finished with warm, natural wood tones and large windows that offered stunning views of the falls and the surrounding landscape.

In the years after its construction, the lodge changed hands several times and served various purposes. Over the years, it served as a tourist stop, a souvenir shop, a restaurant, and even a dance hall. In the 1950s, the lodge was expanded to include a larger dining room, gift shop, and other amenities to accommodate the growing number of visitors to the area.

Unfortunately, the original lodge was destroyed by fire in the early 1960s. After the fire, the lodge was rebuilt and relocated to a new site near the base of the falls. The new lodge was constructed using many of the same materials and techniques as the original, and it was designed to closely resemble the original lodge, both inside and out.

Today, the Multnomah Falls Lodge is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to admire the beauty of the falls and to enjoy the comfortable, rustic atmosphere of the lodge. The lodge is now owned by the U.S. Forest Service, and it serves as a visitor center and a place for tourists to learn about the history and culture of the Columbia River Gorge.

Overall, the Multnomah Falls Lodge is a unique and fascinating part of the history of the Columbia River Gorge, and it is a testament to the enduring beauty and popularity of Multnomah Falls. Whether you are a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a comfortable place to relax and take in the beauty of the falls, the Multnomah Falls Lodge is sure to be a highlight of your visit to the Columbia River Gorge.
