Multnomah Falls Frequently Asked Questions – All the Answers from Taylor, Your Expert Local Guide
Introduction
I’ve been guiding tours to Multnomah Falls for over 5 years and started Waterfall Shuttle because visiting Oregon’s most popular attraction shouldn’t be stressful. Too often, I’ve seen visitors disappointed due to poor communication and policies that don’t make sense. My family’s been living in the Gorge since the ’80s, and I’ve personally spent over 500 days at Multnomah Falls since COVID alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I Need a Permit to Visit Multnomah Falls?
You can avoid the permit requirement year-round by arriving before 9:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. If you must visit during peak times, park for free at nearby Wahkeena Falls and walk over. Despite the parking rules, I’ve never seen cars ticketed or towed in my years guiding, though illegal parking does create a serious safety hazard.
What If I Arrive Without a Permit During Peak Season?
Your biggest issue won’t be the permit—it’s the parking lot gate that automatically closes when the lot fills up, permit or not. A local secret: there’s no gate if you approach from the East, using the westbound entrance.
What Are the Best Times to Visit?
Visit before 9:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m., especially close to sunset. You can arrive early, hike, and stay all day, but be mindful that’s what most visitors do, hence limited parking.
Any Special Moments to Look For?
In summer, around 7:00–7:30 p.m., a spectacular rainbow appears over the falls and bridge. It’s stunning, and you might have the spot all to yourself.
