PDX to Skamania Lodge: Every Way to Get There, Compared
Skamania Lodge sits on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge in Stevenson, about 45 miles east of Portland International Airport. On a map it looks close. In practice, the trip takes 50 to 65 minutes, crosses a toll bridge, and ends in a town where getting a ride back to the airport is harder than getting a ride out. Here is how every option stacks up.
The route
From PDX you take I-205 south to I-84 east, follow the river through the Gorge to the Cascade Locks exit, cross the Bridge of the Gods (a toll bridge) into Washington, and head east on State Route 14 to Stevenson. The lodge is on the hill above town. Traffic on I-84 is light most of the day, but weekend afternoons and holiday weekends add time, and winter ice in the Gorge can close the highway outright.
Option 1: Rental car
A rental gives you freedom to explore, and the Gorge rewards it. The trade-offs are the airport counter line, the toll both ways, resort parking, and a solo drive back to PDX after checkout. If your whole trip is at the lodge, most of that freedom goes unused. If you are planning day trips to Hood River or Multnomah Falls, a rental can make sense, though a guided tour covers the same ground without the driving.
Option 2: Uber or Lyft
Rideshare works fine leaving the airport. The problem is the return. Stevenson is a small town with very few drivers, and conference travel pages for events at the lodge warn attendees that rideshare back to PDX is extremely difficult to get. Plan on a long wait or a cancelled ride, especially for early-morning flights.
Option 3: Taxi through the front desk
The front desk can call a taxi. Group organizers at the lodge have told attendees to expect roughly $100 to $180 for the trip to PDX. It is reliable but expensive for one or two people, and there is no flight tracking on the inbound side.
Option 4: Private car service
Several Portland companies run private sedans to Skamania Lodge, typically starting around $130 to $150 one way. For a couple, that is the most comfortable door-to-door choice, and most of them track your flight. For a family of five with luggage, or a group of colleagues arriving on different flights, the cost climbs quickly because each party needs its own car.

Three things first-timers get wrong
- Booking a rideshare for the return. Reserve the ride back before you arrive.
- Underestimating the drive. Allow an hour, and add a buffer for departures. For a domestic flight, leave the lodge at least three hours before takeoff.
- Forgetting the bridge. The Bridge of the Gods is a toll crossing in both directions. Shuttle fares include it; rentals and rideshares do not.
